Old Barns. There is something about the texture of these weather-worn boards that spark my curiosity about history and the passage of time. And these barns have, indeed, stood the test of time. Like all of the lines across my face that tell the stories of me, I bet every line in the old wood walls tell stories all their own...some good. Some bad. I wonder....have grizzly bears stood and scratched their backs on the walls? Have elk bugled outside the windows? Have moose always drank from the neighboring springs? How many babies have been born inside or outside the walls? How many animals, including humans, have died in the barn's shadows? These lines in the wood, first laid down inside the trunk of a tree, have been shaped into logs then timber slats that were raised by the hands of early Mormon settlers in the shadow of Teton Mountains. Established in the 1890's, 27 homesteads were established by hearty souls who clustered together to take advantage of fertile soil and the wind break provided by Blacktail Butte. Several of the original barns still stand today, with two of the most famous being the "Moulton Barns." These two structures are probably the most photographed barns in the world. This one, the John Moulton Barn was stunningly beautiful on the late fall morning that I made this photograph. Yes, it's been done 1000's of times. But sometimes the beauty of it all forces you to stop and take notice.....and, I'm a sucker for cotton candy skies.
