This young moose calf ventured into a beaver pond at sunrise in Grand Teton National Park. His Momma was not far behind and a bull was in pursuit of her since the fall rut is in full swing. This whole scenario played out quickly....I knew there were moose in the area but wasn't sure exactly where they were. As I rounded a corner on the trail, I saw this cutie, already in the pond, looking back. Mom was pretty far back in the sagebrush flat. Eventually she came running with the bull chasing her....I scrambled under a big pine tree and got quiet while they passed into the pond, and quickly crossed to the other side. I have to admit, I got a little bit of an adrenaline rush. Moose are big animals and I would'nt want to have a rumble with one. My goal was to photograph a moose in the beaver pond at sunrise with the first light of the morning bathing the tops of the Tetons.....so I guess I got it. Next time maybe I'll get the big bull in the next pond up....perfection! Photography is all about being in the right place at the right time....good equipment.....knowledge about animals and behaviors.....and a whole lotta luck.
