It was Sunday, Nov. 6th, 2016, the last day Yellowstone roads were open before the end of the season on Monday. As I was returning to Cody from the East Entrance to the Park, I had to pause in the middle of the Wapiti Valley to watch a large herd of mostly cow elk. The Sun was just about to set, but was hidden behind a narrow cloud. I determined that waiting a few minutes would see the Sun come out and light up the herd and the foreground. The mountains in the background, including Jim Mountain, were still lit up with the late afternoon light. As soon as the Sun reappeared I swept several vertical frames left to right in manual exposure mode and later stitched them together in Photoshop to produce this panorama. There were actually quite a few more elk off to the right of the image, but there was also a power pole, which I didn't want in my pano. This field is part of what is now called the Copperleaf Subdivision, and more houses are now being built right where the elk are lounging about, so this scene can't be taken again. It was also the lower fields of my family's dude ranch from the 1910s to the 1940s, where my grandfather usually planted barley or hay.
