Quite often some of my best photos happen on the spur-of -the-moment; you just look up and there's the picture! That's what happened with "Cold Heart." It was late afternoon on January 31, 2007 as I was driving west on Stampede Avenue, heading for the Post Office before they closed. I looked out at Heart Mountain as I passed the Park County Annex building and noticed that Heart had this wonderful thin cloud in front of it. I quickly changed my plans, drove around the Post Office and turned into the drive to the Cody Rec Center. I parked at the end of the north parking lot at the edge of the hill and grabbed my camera and tripod, set up the camera in manual mode and swept 8 vertical over-lapping frames. My camera at that time was a Canon S3 Powershot, a great little point-and-shoot unit with a 12X zoom lens and a 6 megapixel sensor. People always ask me "What's the best camera for taking pictures?", and I tell them it's the camera you have with you when the picture happens! Well, that S3 certainly wasn't the best camera I've ever owned, but it served me very well all the years I used it. I still have it tucked away in my used camera collection. This version of the panorama is cropped down to about two-thirds of the original length to make it fit a 12x36 inch print. It's been one of my best sellers for several years. I even made it to the Post Office before they closed, too.
