As a group of photographers we hired a snow coach in January of 2018 to take us into Yellowstone. There are only two ways to travel into the park in winter - a snowmobile or snow coach as the access roads are groomed but not plowed. Winter in Yellowstone is truly a wonderland in spite of the cold and snow.
Our guide informed us that the Wapiti Lake Wolf pack had killed a wounded Bison. A Bison with a broken leg had made an easy target for this pack of 16 wolves, then hunting on the Madison River east of the west entrance to Yellowstone. For two days we watched the wolves feed from the Bison carcass, chase off the ravens and wrestle with one another. At one point, we heard wolves howling behind us but the carcass and most of the wolves were in front of us. Three of the pack had been separated from the main pack and were calling to reunite with larger group. A highlight of the trip was a recording of the wolves behind us and in front of us howling back and forth to one another.
When the wolves had their fill they began to travel along the Madison River back to home territory. Because it was getting dark and they were some distance away across the river this photo is not tack sharp and can be enlarged no larger than 10" x 30". I recommend 8 x 24 or 5 x 15 for best results.
